ATM Safety Tips
The development of technology has made banking easier for all of us. In our lifetimes, one of the most revolutionary developments that we have seen is the global acceptance and usage of the Automated Teller Machine (ATM). ATMs have made it easier to deposit and withdraw funds, check account balances, etc. They provide us with a convenient way of banking without the need to go to a branch during normal business hours.
Thieves and robbers have also found ways to exploit this technology. Lobby ATMs inside credit unions and bank branches are safe, but if you need to use other ATMs such as walk up or drive up machines here are tips to avoid becoming a victim of theft or robbery:
- Always pay close attention to the ATM and your surroundings. Choose a well-lit ATM location free of shrubbery that is located in an open area with a lot of people, like a lobby or one with a street view. When possible, bring a companion along when using an ATM — especially at night.
- Maintain an awareness of your surroundings throughout the entire transaction. If you see anyone or anything suspicious while conducting a transaction, cancel your transaction and leave. When leaving an ATM make sure you are not being followed. If you are, drive immediately to a police or fire station, or to a crowded, well-lighted location or business.
- Do not use an ATM that appears damaged, unusual looking or offers options with which you are not familiar or comfortable.
- Do not allow people to look over your shoulder as you enter your PIN. Memorize your PIN and keep it private; never write it on the back of your card or give it to anyone else. Do not re-enter your PIN if the ATM eats your card — contact a credit union official.
- Do not wear expensive jewelry or take other valuables to the ATM. This is an added incentive to the assailant.
- Never count cash at the machine or in public. Wait until you are in your car or another secure place. Always ask for and keep your receipt for your transactions.
- When using a drive-up ATM, keep your engine running, your doors locked and leave enough room to maneuver between your car and the one ahead of you in the drive-up line. If someone approaches your car, leave.
- Maintain a supply of deposit envelopes at home or in your car for those ATM machines accepting envelopes. Prepare all transaction paperwork prior to your arrival at the ATM. This will minimize the amount of time spent at the machine.
- Closely monitor your monthly statements, as well as your balances and immediately report any fraudulent activities to a Nevada Federal member services representative.
- If you are involved in a confrontation with an assailant who demands your money, COMPLY. As soon as the robber leaves, call 911 or go to the nearest police station to file a report.
Keep these tips in mind as you use ATMs to do your banking. They can help you be a safe and smart member of the credit union.
